Engine Shed
The engine shed is part of the
site that was re-built in the 1930's, along with the sand furnace
and coaling stage. The shed is a standard GWR 4-road one, with
provision to extend it to a 6-road one. During the Second World
War the office area was extended, along with several other buildings
round Didcot to cope with the increased traffic.
The engine shed is complete with stores areas, offices, and a lifting shop behind. All 4 shed roads have full-length pits as well as pits outside, and when built there wee smoke chutes on all 4 roads. During the last major repair to the shed in BR days the smoke chute on 2-road was removed, to allow access to the top of diesels.
